What is the Health Occupations Career Cluster?
The Health Occupations Career Cluster of Hutchison High School combines a series of foundation classes and a few complimentary academic classes in Math, Science and Social Studies. Students participate in a number of exciting classes including Introduction to Health Occupations A , Introduction to Health Occupations B (includes CPR & First Aid Certifications), Nutrition in Health Care, Professionalism in Health Care, Medical Terminology, Pharmacy Technician, Emergency Medical Technician I (EMT), Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT), Law & Ethics for Health Professionals, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and Fire Services.

Class Information
Intro to Health Occupations A
This course begins with a basic exploration of a variety of health care related careers, including the roles and responsibilities of health care workers, as well as job and education requirements and opportunities. Then we will begin to develop the basic skills that are needed for any career in health care: medical terminology, medical/legal ethics, medical math confidentiality, safety, infection control, problem solving, basic medical skills, anatomy/ physiology, and communication.
This course is a “Tech Prep” course which offers the opportunity of college credit upon the successful completion of the semester. (2 college credits)

Professionalism in Health Care
Professionalism is a Students opportunity to learn the aspects of being a young professionals. They will explore why healthcare needs professionals and the importance of professionalism in every job and for every worker. This course is designed for students in the Health Science Career Cluster.

Nutrition in Health Care
Nutrition is an introduction to the scientific principles of nutrition and their relationship to the life cycle. This course will focus on the importance nutrition plays in personal health, and how to objectively evaluate nutritional intake using scientifically sound resources. Students will analyze their own diets, the basic chemistry of nutrients, digestion and assimilation of food and the relationship of diet to health and/or chronic disease. Coursework will emphasize teamwork, appreciation of cultural diversity, food safety, healthy snack choices, and meal planning in order to take control of the student’s diet and health as well as provide a foundation for a career in health care.

Introduction to Pharmacology
This course introduces pharmacy practice and the technician’s role in various pharmacy settings. The course emphasizes the history of pharmacy, pharmacy law and ethics, pharmacy terminology, symbols, dosage forms, and the 100 most frequently prescribed drugs. This course teaches basic pharmacology, the science of medication actions, sources, chemical properties, classification, uses, therapeutic effect, side-effects, adverse effects, and routes of administration. Students with an interest in becoming a certified nursing assistant, medical assistant, psychologist, dental technician, nurse, dentist, physician or pharmacist will find this course beneficial.

Medical Terminology

Students will study medical terminology including the analysis and origin of word roots, prefixes and suffixes. By understanding the word components, the students will be able to build, spell and define medical words. Course content will be presented by body systems focusing on terms for anatomy, diagnostic, laboratory and medical specialties. Medical Terminology includes the use of a medical dictionary, word pronunciation, and abbreviations. This course is designed for students in the Health Science Career Cluster.
This course is a “Tech Prep” course which offers the opportunity of college credit upon the successful completion of both Fall and Spring semesters. (3 college credits)

Medical Law and Ethics
This course is an introduction in the basics of medical law, ethics, and bioethics for the Health Care Professions. This course is designed for students in the Health Science Career Cluster. This course is a “Tech Prep” course which offers the opportunity of college credit upon the successful completion with a C or better. (2 college credits)
